Description
May bug larva. Larva of a common European cockchafer beetle, or May bug, (Melolontha melolontha). The larvae are large white grubs that live underground and can take 3 years to mature. They feed on plant roots, such as potato roots, and grow to a size of about 4 centimetres. They pupate in early autumn and develop into a cockchafer in around six weeks. The beetles are noted for their noisy, clumsy, buzzing flight. They live for a few months and damage trees by feeding on leaves and flowers.
