Description
Marvel of Peru plant stem. Light micrograph of a section through the root tuber (bottom) and stem (top) of a marvel of Peru (Mirabilis jalapa) plant. Most of the tuber is made up of parenchyma cells (blue), with stored starch and scattered vascular bundles (red-violet). The outer tissue of the tuber is made up of cork (phellem, brown) and an inner phellogen (cork cambium, red). The stem is similar but thinner. The parenchyma is smaller and there are more vascular bundles (red). The outer tissues are the epidermis and cortex (deep violet). Magnification: x5 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
