Description
Martian rock surface. Coloured image of the surface of a rock on Mars, taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. The rover landed in a small crater on Mars on 24 January 2004. This bedrock, nick-named 'El Capitan', is situated on the crater's rim. It is the target for geological analysis to discover the rock's origins and to ascertain whether water once flowed on Mars. The finely-layered rock contains sphere- shaped granules (blue) that measure between 1 and 2 millimetres in diameter. They are gradually being released from the rock (top right) by erosion.
