Description
Mars, Hubble Space Telescope image. North is at top. Mars was 76 million kilometres from Earth during this close approach on 12 May 2016. The northern and southern polar ice caps are visible (blue-white) at top and bottom, as are clouds (blue-white) above the Syrtis Major region at right and at left. This view is centred on the Arabia Terra region. The large crater at lower right is the Huygens Crater. The dark area at lower centre consists of Sinus Meridiani and Sinus Sabaeus. Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun, has a diameter of around 6800 kilometres. This image was obtained with Hubble's WFC3 (Wide Field Camera 3) and its UVIS (ultraviolet and visible light) channels.
