Description
Markarian 739 colliding galaxies. This object (centre) consists of two galaxies that are merging. This visible light image from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey shows the two galactic nuclei (yellow dots). The red object is in the foreground of this wide-field view. It was already known that one of these galactic nuclei was an active galactic nuclei (AGN), but the identification of the other galactic nucleus as also an AGN was done using NASA's Swift and Chandra X-ray satellites. The results were published in 2011. Markarian 739 (NGC 3758) is located 425 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Leo.
