Mariner's compass, a version of which was invented by Pierre de Maricourt in the 13th century. Pierre de Maricourt (fl. 1269) was a French scholar who experimented with magnetism and wrote the first extant treatise describing the properties of magnets. This was a letter entitled Epistola de Magnete (1269) detailing Pierre's magnetic experiments and instruments. This illustration was published in a 19th century copy of Epistola de Magnete in 1868.
