Description
Marie Curie (1867-1934), Polish-French physicist and chemist, with her daughters. Curie is famous for her pioneering work in the study of radioactivity, and for being the only person to hold two Nobel Prizes in different fields of science (physics and chemistry). She developed methods for the separation of radium from radioactive residues, allowing its characteristics to be studied. She strongly believed in its therapeutic properties, which she promoted during World War I. She is shown here with her two daughters from her marriage to Pierre Curie, Irene and Eve. This picture is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s.
