Description
Map of the Atapuerca 'Pit of Bones' site. This cave is named 'Sima de los Huesos' in Spanish, meaning 'Pit of Bones'. It is located in the Atapuerca mountain range in the province of Burgos, Spain. Over 5000 fossil remains have been found here, dating from 350,000 years ago, most of which are remains of Homo heidelbergensis. The Atapuerca sites were made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. Five locations are shown here, with a vertical profile (upper right) showing the depth of the sites within the cave system. The five areas highlighted are: 'Area A' (orange), 'Area B' (blue), Sima Rampa Baja (green), Sima Rampa Media (purple), and Sima Rampa Alta (red).
