Description
Lord Lindsay (1847-1913), British astronomer, and 26th Earl of Crawford (born James Ludovic Lindsay). Lindsay, along with his father, developed a private observatory in Aberdeenshire, along with an extensive library. He made expeditions to observe the solar eclipse in Cadiz in 1870, and went to Mauritius in 1874 to observe the Transit of Venus. Lindsay, who was a noted stamp collector, was also the 9th Earl of Balcarres, and was elected Member of Parliament for Wigan in 1874. He was President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1878-1880). This portrait dates from 1910.
