Description
Light micrograph of a section of white adipose (fat) tissue, a type of connective tissue, from an adult. It comprises up to 20% of the total body weight in normal male adults and 25% in females. The cells of this tissue are known as adipocytes. Fat is stored within adipocytes as lipid droplets, which eventually fuse together in a single droplet. This occupies most of the cytoplasm which is reduced to a tiny rim around the periphery of the cell. In normal hystological sections (as this one) the fat content of adipocytes is removed leaving a large unstained (white) area within each cell. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
