Description
Adenovirus AD-36 and fat cells. Computer artwork of adenovirus AD-36 particles (from lower left to upper right) and fat cells (adipocytes, lower right). AD-36 is one of 51 types of adenoviruses known to infect humans. Most adenoviruses result in cold, flu, inflammation or infection of the body, but AD-36 is unusual in that it may be linked to human obesity and could be contributing to the obesity epidemic. However, scientists do not yet know for certain whether the virus is causing this rise in obesity, so the research is still continuing (as of August 2007).
