Description
Granuloma reaction to suture. Light micrograph of a section through a foreign body granuloma formed in response to a suture (green). A granuloma is an aggregation of cells associated with chronic in- flammation. Foreign body granulomas occur when particles like splinters or sutures (stitches) en- ter the body. Here, a decomposing suture (green) is being consumed by macrophage white blood cells. Some of these have fused to form multinucleated giant body cells" (upper right, for example). These can engulf relatively large fragments of the foreign material. Connective tissue surrounds the granuloma. Stained with eosin and hematoxylin. Magnification x125 at 35mm size."
