Description
Liver tissue. Light micrograph of a section through a mammalian liver. The liver tissue has been injected with two dyes to show the blood vessels. The hepatic vein is has been highlighted with blue dye, and the hepatic artery with red dye. The hepatic artery is on the outside, and the blood from this passes through the canals (sinusoids) between the liver cells, to reach the hepatic vein in the center. The liver metabolises toxins in the blood, stores nutrients as complex metabolic products, and produces bile to aid the digestion of fat. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
