Description
Light micrograph of human compact bone, showing a Haversian system. Compact bone is built up of numerous Haversian systems, each one comprising a Haversian canal (hole, centre), surrounded by concentric bands of calcified material called lamellae. The Haversian canals form a network of channels for the nerves and blood & lymph vessels. The dark dots lying amongst the lamellae are tiny cavities called lacunae, each one representing the former site of an osteocyte, a cell responsible for bone deposition. Radiating from each lacuna are dark filaments called canaliculi which form a fine network of tubes for the exchange of gases & nutrients. Mag: x320 at 6x4.5cm,x177 at 35mm size.
