Description
Lavender leaf oil glands, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The spherical structures are the oil glands, and the hair-like structures are a type of trichome. When the leaf is touched or damaged, the glands rupture and release the oil that gives lavender its distinctive fragrance. Magnification: x250 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
