Description
Large bee fly (Bombylius major) resting on a fallen twig. The larvae of bee flies are a parasite of solitary bees and wasps. The eggs are flicked by the adult female toward the entrance of the underground nests of the bees and wasps. After hatching, the larvae find their way into the nests to feed on the grubs. Photographed in Dorset, UK, in spring.
