Description
Lagoon Nebula (M8), optical image. This emission nebula is around 5000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Sagittarius. The nebula is around 110 light years across. The red glow of gas results from radiation from hot young stars striking interstellar hydrogen. The dark dust filaments were created from cool giant stars and the debris of supernovae explosions. Small dark knots, and globules that are condensing protostellar clouds, show that star formation is still taking place. Photographed in 2018 from the Cumeada Observatory in the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve, Portugal.
