Description
Krypton-filled incandescent light bulb. Incandescent light bulbs produce light and heat by passing an electric current through a thin metal filament (coiled wire at centre of light bulb). In standard incandescent light bulbs, the air in the bulb is a mixture of the noble gas argon (Ar) and nitrogen (N). Here, the bulb is filled with the heavier noble gas krypton (Kr). This lowers the rate of evaporation of the filament (making the bulb last longer). It also increases the efficiency. Krypton bulbs can also be made much smaller than standard light bulbs, further increasing the the savings and efficiencies.
