Description
Male lion. Juvenile or sub-adult male lion (Panthera leo). This large carnivore is a social animal, living in prides consisting of several adult females and their offspring plus one or more adult males. A young, sub-adult male must leave his birth pride at the age of around 3 years. After leaving, he will join a group or coalition composed of two or more young males. Eventually the coalition will oust other resident males from a pride and become dominant, gaining access to breeding females. P. leo is found in savannah and scrubland throughout sub- Saharan Africa and in scattered areas in India. Photographed in the Etosha National Park, Namibia.
