Description
Jupiter's magnetosphere. Illustration of the planet Jupiter (centre) and its magnetosphere (magnetic field lines shown) shielding it from cosmic radiation and the solar wind. The grey background mesh represents the boundary of the magnetosphere. Jupiter's magnetosphere is disrupted by volcanic eruptions from its moon Io, creating a ring of sulphur (yellow) around the planet. Other Jovian moons are also shown (Ganymede, Europa, Metis, Adrastea, Almathea and Thebe). Most of the charged particles from the Sun are diverted around the planet. Some are trapped and guided by the planet's magnetic field towards the polar regions, where they impact the planet's atmosphere and cause aurorae.
