Description
Jupiter from Io. Artwork of the planet Jupiter (upper left) seen from the surface of Io, a volcanically active moon. A gas eruption is seen at upper right. Io is the closest large moon to Jupiter. The enormous tidal (gravitational) forces that are exerted on it during its orbit push and pull the moon so much that it remains unstable. This makes it the most geologically active body in the solar system. it orbits Jupiter at a distance of 420,000 kilometres, taking just under two days to complete each orbit. It is 3600 kilometres in diameter, a little larger than Earth's Moon.
