Description
Jupiter during a Jovian year, 2003-2015. This sequence shows the changing appearance of Jupiter as seen from Earth, over 12 years from 2003 to 2015. This is the period of time that it takes for Jupiter to orbit the Sun, a period known as a Jovian year. Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest. It has a diameter more than ten times that of Earth and a volume of over 1000 Earths. It is a gas giant and is mostly hydrogen and helium. The outer surface clouds are coloured by trace chemical elements and blown by high winds to form bands and long-lived storm systems such as the Great Red Spot.
