Description
Joseph Ritson (1752-1803), British antiquarian, writing at a desk. Ritson was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. A fierce and sometimes vitriolic critic of his contemporaries, he had a reputation for eccentricity. He main works involved editing collections of old songs, ballads, fairy tales, legends and romances, including those concerning Robin Hood. In September 1803 he went insane and died shortly afterwards. Artwork from 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858 by English printer and antiquarian John Nichols and his son John Bowyer Nichols.
