Description
Joseph Lancaster (1778-1838). 1880 illustration of the English writer and educator Joseph Lancaster. In 1798, Lancaster founded a free elementary school in Borough Road, London, UK, using a variant of the monitorial system, which developed into what is now known as peer tutoring. In 1818, he helped to start the first model school in Philadelphia, USA, to train teachers to implement his system. However, despite initial success, the Lancasterian schools were criticized for poor standards and harsh discipline.
