Description
John Van Nostrand Dorr (1872-1962), US chemist. Dorr worked in chemical engineering, developing machines (classifiers) to separate solid particles suspended in liquids (used in sewage treatment and water purification). His awards included the John Scott Medal (1916) from the City of Philadelphia and the Franklin Institute and the Perkin Medal (1941) of the Society of Chemical Industry. In the 1950s, Dorr made a key contribution to road safety by proposing the painting of white lines on the outside shoulder of motorways and roads. This dramatically reduced accident rates.
