Description
John Scott Haldane (1860-1936), British physiologist. Born and educated in Edinburgh, Haldane worked at Glasgow, Oxford and Birmingham universities. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1897). In 1921, he became director of the Mining Research Laboratory. He recommended the use of mice in coal mines that would alert miners to the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. His research included the Haldane effect relating to haemoglobin and blood gases. He was made Companion of Honour in 1928 and awarded the Copley Medal (1934). Photographed in 1920 at Haldane's office at his residence on Linton Road, Oxford, UK.
