Description
John Hunter (1728-1793). Caricature of the Scottish surgeon and anatomist John Hunter holding a human skull. Hunter is regarded as the founder of a scientific approach to surgery. He served as a surgeon in Portugal during the Seven Years' War. This resulted in his publication 'A Treatise on the Blood, Inflammation and Gunshot Wounds', correctly stating that bullets lodged in the body should be left alone unless endangering life. In comparative anatomy his dissections of numerous animal and human cadavers led to important findings on blood circulation, teeth, embryology and digestion.
