Description
John Clarke Slater (1900-1976, left), American physicist, with his father John Rothwell Slater. Slater is best known for his work on the electronic structure and properties of atoms, molecules and solids. He was at the forefront of work on the application of quantum mechanics. In 1930 he became Chairman of the Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), expanding the department and recasting the curriculum, making it one of the best physics departments in the world. Photographed in June 1926.
