John Browning (1835-1925), English instrument maker. After taking over his family's business Browning became a leading maker of scientific instruments, particularly microscopes and telescopes. As Optical and Physical Instrument Maker to Her Majesty's Government, he supplied the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. He also wrote numerous articles on his craft. The Browning business flourished as interest in astronomy grew among both amateurs and professionals throughout the 19th century, finally closing after 145 years of trading when John Browning retired in 1905.
