Description
John Anstis (1669-1744), English antiquarian and officer of arms. Antis trained in and qualified to practice law in 1699. He then proceeded to enter politics and a career in heraldry. After years of campaigning, he attained the highest heraldic office in England, becoming Garter King of Arms in 1718. Antis established the Order of the Bath in 1725. He also wrote widely on antiquarian matters, leaving unpublished notes on English history, jurisprudence, chronology, heraldry, ecclesiastical and military affairs. Artwork from Nichols's 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858.
