Description
English geochemist Joe Farman (1930-2013), photographed in his office at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) head- quarters in Cambridge in 1987. In 1985, Farman and his colleague Jonathan Shanklin discovered the ozone hole over Antarctica. The ozone hole is a severe depletion in the ozone layer which occurs in September/October, the Antarctic spring. Satellite data show that the ozone hole has grown larger and more severe each year since 1980. The hole is probably caused by chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which are used in aerosol sprays and refrigerants. Farman is a Principal Scientific Officer at BAS and head of its stratosphere section.
