Description
Jewel Box star cluster (NGC 4755) and Mimosa, combined optical and infrared image. At upper right is the bright star Mimosa, one of the four stars in the Southern Cross (Crux). At centre is the Jewel Box, a star cluster around 6500 light years distant in the constellation of Crux. Most of the cluster's stars are blue/white supergiants, massive stars thought to be around 80,000 times more luminous than the Sun. The dark area across bottom is part of the Coal Sack Nebula, dust obscuring the stars. Image data from the Digitized Sky Survey 2. Image published in 2009.
