Description
Jennie Kidd Trout (1841-1921), Canadian physician. Trout, born Jennie Kidd Gowanlock, was the first woman to legally qualify as a doctor in Canada. After working as a teacher, she began studying medicine after developing a chronic illness. She graduated from the Women's Medical College in Pennsylvania in 1875, opening the Therapeutic and Electrical Institute in Toronto. Trout retired in 1882, but helped open a medical school for women in Ontario. This photograph dates from between 1905 and 1945. It is from the Harris and Ewing Collection, which mostly consists of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA.
