Artist's Description
Jean Marie Joseph Coutelle (1748-1835), colonel and commander of the first military balloon observation unit in 1794. Le Compagne d'Aerostiers" was created by King Louis XVI on 2 April 1794. Many aeronauts were trained in the use of four balloons. In May and June 1794, numerous observations by Coutelle of enemy positions helped to win several battles. The Aerostiers were disbanded in 1802."
