Description
Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) young in snow next to a rock. The young are cared for by their mother and carried for their first year. This primate has the northernmost range of any monkey, inhabiting the islands of Japan. In winter, temperatures can fall to minus 5 degrees Celsius and the monkey warms itself by bathing in hot springs. It usually lives in groups of around 100 individuals. Groups have a strict social hierarchy, being led by adult males. The Japanese macaque (sometimes called the Japanese snow monkey) feeds on leaves and ripe fruits. In the winter it may resort to eating buds and even tree bark. Photographed in Nagano, Japan in January.
