Description
James Francis Tennant (1829-1915), English astronomer. Born in India to a Brigadier-General, Tennant studied mathematics while training as a soldier. He started his career as a Second Lieutenant in the Bengal Engineers. He saw action in the mutiny of 1857, and by 1859 he was a Major. In 1867 he helped organise the observations made of the total solar eclipse seen from India in August 1868. Other observations he participated in were the eclipse of December 1871, and (by now a Colonel) the Transit of Venus in 1874. He retired to England in 1882, and was a Lieutenant-General at the time of his death. He was President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1890-1892).
