Description
James Blundell (1790-1878), British physician. Blundell studied at Guy's Hospital in London. He obtained his medical degree in 1813 from the University of Edinburgh. Blundell specialised in obstetrics, and from 1814 he assisted his uncle the physiologist John Haighton in giving lectures at Guy's. Blundell succeeded Haighton as lecturer in 1818. Blundell pioneered blood transfusions, recognising that they could be used to treat blood loss during childbirth. Blundell began his attempts at transfusions in 1818, experimenting during the 1820s and reporting a successful case in 1829. He retired from medical practice in 1847. Engraving by John Cochran after Henry Room.
