Maxwell. In 1881 he became professor of mathematics and physics at University College, Nottingham. During 1882-5 he was a consultant to Edison's London office. He became professor of electrical technology at University College, London in 1885 and in the 1890s worked with G. Marconi. In 1904 Fleming invented a thermionic valve which allowed electricity to flow in one direction only. It was used in early electronics but has been replaced by solid-state devices.
