Description
Iwo Jima. Satellite image of the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. North is at top. This island, only 8 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide, was used as a military base in World War II (airstrip seen at centre). Iwo Jima is in the Pacific Ocean, over 1000 kilometres from the Japanese mainland. It is volcanic, with a volcanic cone (Suribachi-yama, 166 metres high) in the bottom left corner. Waves (white) are seen breaking on the shores of the island. The vegetation is sparse, with large areas of barren volcanic sand and soil. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite on 4 December 2003.
