Description
Isaac Barrow (1630-1677), English mathematician. Barrow graduated from Cambridge University in 1648 and became Professor of Greek (1660). He was also Master of Trinity College (1672-1677), and Lucasian Chair in Mathematics (1664-1669). He resigned the latter in favour of his pupil Issac Newton, whose work on differential calculus he came close to anticipating. He was also a noted classicist and theologian. This frontispiece is from his 'Geometrical Lectures' (1735), a translated edition of a collection first published in 1669. The Latin inscription gives his name and refers to Cambridge University and Trinity College.
