Description
Irrigation with aquifer water. ?Infrared satellite image of farmland (red) that has been irrigated by aquifer water in Libya. The vegetation appears red in this infrared view. Water is black, barren land is green, and towns and cities (one at centre left and ?one at lower left) are blue-grey. ?The fields are both rectangular and circular in shape. ? ?The black circle below the fields is a large reservoir of water obtained from aquifers, underground areas of ?rock ?and ?sand that contain water that can be thousands of years old. ?This is ?the ?Grand ?Omar Muktar ?water ?project, ? near ?the city of Suluq. There are plans to develop this as Libya's largest reservoir. Image obtained on 10 April 2006, by the ASTER thermal sensor on NASA's Terra satellite.
