Description
Illustration of Io, the innermost of the four Galilean moons of the planet Jupiter, and the most volcanically active world in the Solar System. Io has hundreds of volcanoes, including some that erupt lava dozens of kilometres high. The volcanism on Io is due to tidal heating as it is stretched by Jupiter's strong gravitational pull and by the lesser gravitational effects of Jupiter's other satellites.
