Description
Investigating electromagnetic induction. Apparatus used to show the effect of a conductor moving through a magnetic field. Two weights, one magnetic (not seen) and one non-magnetic (yellow, lower left), are dropped simultaneously down two identical copper tubes (centre left and right). As the magnetic weight moves down the tube it causes a current to be induced in the tube. This generates a magnetic field which opposes the magnetic field of the weight, causing it to slow down. As the non-magnetic weight does not have the same effect it falls through it's tube much faster than the magnetic one.
