Description
International Space Station (ISS). Computer artwork of the orbiting ISS with a docked space shuttle (lower right). The ISS is powered by about 4000 square metres of solar panels (top). The mass of the ISS is about 450,000 kilogrammes. The inhabitable, pressurised modules (lower centre) have a total volume roughly equal to the space inside two airliners. The six crew members that inhabit the ISS perform experiments such as studies of the effects of near-weightless (microgravity) conditions on materials and biological tissues. The ISS is due to be completed in 2003.
