Description
Interacting galaxies Arp 194, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. This group of galaxies is over 100,000 lights years across. There are three galaxies or galactic nuclei at top, two in the process of merging. At bottom is a single spiral galaxy. A stream of stellar material (blue) is emerging from the upper region. The blue colour is due to clusters of hot massive stars. Arp 194 is some 600 million light years distant, in the constellation of Ursa Major. Image obtained in January 2009, with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2).
