Description
Desert irrigation. Infrared satellite image of circular, irrigated fields (at centre) in the desert. In the infrared range, healthy vegetation shows up red. Each of these irrigation circles are watered by a revolving boom which trickles water onto the ground. This is a much more efficient way of using water than spraying jets of water from a central point. Many deserts have underground reservoirs of water (aquifiers) beneath them. Many of these aquifiers are becoming polluted or drained because of over-exploitation. Image of the Sahara desert at Al Kufrah, Libya, taken by the American Landsat satellite in February.
