Description
Hydrocarbon lakes on Titan, Cassini radar image. These lakes are thought to contain a mixture of methane and ethane. They are located in the north polar region of Titan, which was experiencing its winter. It is thought that the lakes evaporate during Titan's summer. The liquids are thought to be in a dynamic equilibrium with the atmosphere, as is the case with water on Earth. Numerous lakes have been found on Titan by Cassini, some of which are so large that they have been called seas. The largest covers proportionally more of Titan's surface than the Black Sea does on Earth. This image is a mosaic of frames taken on passes on 22nd July 2006, 23rd September, 9th October and 22nd February 2007.
