Description
Human backbone. Illustration of an anterior (frontal) view of the human spine, with the pelvis at bottom. The spine extends from the skull (not seen) to the pelvis. It is a flexible column of small compact bones called vertebrae, that enclose and protect the spinal cord. The vertebrae are separated by discs of fibrocartilage (intervertebral discs). In an adult, there are 26 vertebrae.
