Description
Hugo Eckener (1868-1954), German airship commander. Eckener's early career was in journalism, which included reporting on the first Zeppelin flights. Initially critical of the new aircraft, he joined the Zeppelin company in 1908, obtaining his airship license in 1911. During World War I he trained Germany's airship pilots. He then became the head of the Zeppelin company and captained several record-breaking flights, becoming a national hero in Germany. Here, he is visiting the USA around the time of his delivery of the USS Los Angeles (ZR-3) airship. Photographed in Washington DC on 16 October 1924.
