Description
The black speck near the centre of this picture is the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photographed in orbit shortly after its launch from the space shuttle Discovery on 24 April, 1990. The shuttle's remote manipulator arm is visible in the foreground (bottom). The HST will be able to view objects 50 times fainter & 7 times further than is possible with existing ground-based optical telescopes. It will also produce images of much higher resolution (detail) because they will not suffer the blurring effect of Earth's turbulent atmosphere. The two solar panels which power the satellite can just be made out in the picture.
